    • Eden Valley - 100% Riesling
      Tasting notes
The 2015 season was quite dry. While there were good rains in early winter of 2014, conditions dried up in August, with an exceptionally dry and warm spring requiring some early watering’s to ensure the vines got off to a good start. These ideal conditions resulted in an early flowering, resulting in an excellent fruit set. Careful management of soil moisture kept canopies healthy, and a relatively mild summer resulted in ideal ripening conditions. The nose is fresh and vibrant, with lifted citrus and floral notes, underpinned by a bouquet of lime, apple and hints of wild herb. The palate is lively and intense, with mouth filling zesty lime and mineral flavours supported by vibrant and balanced acidity, running through to a long and lingering sherbet lime finish. read more

      The
2011 harvest was one of our latest; influenced by the un-seasonally cool summer
and autumn. Flavours built slowly, with acid levels maintaining freshness as
sugars rose. A major rain event in mid-March caused a botrytis outbreak that
required us drop almost two thirds of the crop by hand, leaving the remaining
clean fruit to ripen for another month before harvest. Now cellared for your enjoyment, it bursts with fresh lime and spice, and of honeysuckle. read more

      The
2012 vintage was blessed with mild summer conditions and cool nights that
helped develop great flavours and excellent sugar to acid ratios. Two rain
events in late summer ensured healthy leaf canopy through verasion and
ripening, followed by very mild and gentle conditions in March; ideal for
excellent tannin maturity and flavour development. The deeply rooted 1880 vines
soldiered through their 132nd season in fine style, with even
ripening conditions resulting in harvest a week earlier than average. The
2012 vintage of The 1880 Shiraz shows great purity and depth, with complex
layers of fruit, spice and subtle savoury elements supported by finely matured
tannins. The palate combines intensity of flavour with the elegance and purity
of cooler climate Shiraz, underpinned with finely balanced oak. read more

      Tasting notes
The Cuttings is produced from a small dry grown vineyard established from cuttings taken from the original 1880 vines. Planting started in the early 1980s with the strongest pruning rods from the old vines dug into the stony soil. Each year a few more rows were added until the vineyard was completed. The Cuttings vineyard are even more low yielding than the 1880 vines, and are typically more stressed, lacking another century of root growth. Berries are smaller than the 1880 but they share the thick skins and the vineyards characteristic soft tannins and luscious fruit. The 2012 Cuttings Shiraz has real depth and structure, with fragrant, spicy and intense black and red fruits. It exhibits lovely cool climate finesse, a seam of elegance built on its natural acidity and fine grain tannins. The Cuttings delivers the concentrated depth and power of its lineage with a long, seamless finish. read more

      Normal_2015-97-pts-james-halliday-wine-companion.20140731170015
      Tasting notes
The 2010 vintage was underpinned by the best winter / spring rainfall in five
years, providing good soil moisture for the growing season. A November heatwave reminded us of the recent drought years, however the balance of the ripening season was warm to mild, the cooler climate of Eden Valley - in particular the cool to cold nights through most of summer, ensured the deeply rooted 1880 vines soldiered through the season in fine style. Harvest was 3 weeks earlier than average thanks to the mild sunny conditions. Even with only two acres, (24 rows averaging 38 vines each) we saw sufficient variation in flavour development to justify hand picking in three parts, with the best parcels blended together pre-bottling.

This is the pinnacle of The 1880 vineyard, with only 300 bottles produced from a single barrique from the 2008 vintage. There is no question the French oak, and the extra time in the bottle prior to release has resulted in an extraordinarily complex and intense wine. With savoury, bitter chocolate and forest floor characters this is truly and exceptional wine. read more

  • Regional Series
    • Eden Valley - 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% Shiraz
      Tasting notes
Vibrant and bright, fresh and lifted red fruits, violets, spice, pepper, fine grained
tannins, lively, medium bodied and well structured – where is it from? Most are surprised when they learn it is from the 2011 vintage. “But wasn’t 2011 a bad vintage?” Wetter - yes. Challenging - yes. Cooler than normal - yes. A little stressful at times - yes. But bad - no. Just different; and with good vineyard management, and a cool, dry finish to the season (rains eased off in mid-March, giving us 6 weeks of dry weather to complete ripening), some special, and rather unique wines were made. This is one of them. We decided that the Four Corners should be a showcase of the diversity and style of the Eden Valley region, by sourcing small parcels of fruit from separate vineyards across the four corners of Eden Valley, sourced from growers (and vineyards) that are well known to us, plus any de-classified barrels from the Poonawatta 1880 and Cuttings vineyard. read more

    • Eden Valley - 53% Grenache, 47% Shiraz
      Normal_2016-94-pts-james-halliday.20151113181802
      Tasting notes
The hero of this blend is the Grenache sourced from the original and ancient Hamilton vineyard near Springton. Eden Valley Grenache is a rarity, and to find a century plus planting in a microclimate perfectly suited to the variety was a rare discovery. With only one tonne secured, we blended it with Shiraz from the Eden Valley “high country” and Angaston regions, along with a small amount from the Poonawatta estate vineyards to create this beautiful Grenache Shiraz. Vibrant and fresh, with red fruits dominating, fine tannins are balanced with fruit sweetness. Elegant, composed and compact, flavours of raspberry, ripe plum, cherry and some black fruits are beautifully integrated, with some floral notes and spices adding complexity. Red fruits dominate the juicy finish supported with succulent acidity; the older oak supporting but not dominating. read more

Goodies Block is located in the Barossa ranges, on the western side of the Eden Valley region. The vineyard slopes east, soaking up the morning sun and enjoying late afternoon shade. The soil in this region is quartz based sandy loam; it’s leaner profile rich in minerals. This is a more temperate part of the Eden Valley region, with cooler days and mild nights shaping the fruit to express the sites regionality. read more
